i wrote my way into a childhood memory during my
stream-of-consciousness morning pages today. out of nowhere i remembered a Muppet movie featuring rabbits
as protagonists. YouTube filled in
the rest and before i knew it i was watching the first 10 minutes of the 1986
masterpiece, “The Tale of the Bunny Picnic” by Jim Henson.
it was immensely satisfying to see the same video i compulsively watched as a kid, the same scenes i was sure existed but couldn’t place, along with shots during which i remember thinking, “i want to be a bunny so i can do that.”
and while The New York Times Guide to the Best Children's Videos deems it “long, slow-moving, audio poor, some inappropriate language,” i say, “sounds like the 80’s to me!” i happened to talk to my mom today and she recalled it fondly, deeming it “not bad” before humming the theme song.
the story’s moral is “those who hurt others hurt themselves” and as if that weren’t enough, there’s a fantastic song at the end, “Drum of Time.” (the Muppet mouth breathing always gets me). listen below:
