"the republic of bad taste" is a short story by Jonathan Franzen.  it's from The New Yorker's summer fiction issue, which really crushed it this year.  franzen also still has it and will release his fifth novel this fall.

have you heard of the "everyday (country/continent/region/neighborhood)" instagram accounts?  i discovered them during the video of the "emerging" exhibit at the annenberg space for photography a couple weeks ago.  they capture daily life--which isn't all misery, warfare, and strife--in places like Africa (the account that started it all), Eastern EuropeIran, Middle EastLatin America, Asia, and the entire U.S.
