it’s actually a story, “yesterday” by haruki murakami  from the june 9, 2014 issue of The New Yorker.  it’s long but you can handle it.

i subscribed to maptia—essentially the medium of travel stories—as soon as it launched.  at the time, i assumed i’d giddily await essays about far-off places i might never see in person.  then their weekly emails, mixed in with everyone else’s weekly emails, just accumulated in my inbox. 

i felt like, “ok, maptia.  calm down, i’ll get to you in a minute.”  which, of course, i never did.  so here we are.  but the plus side is now they have a great article inventory i’ll occasionally pull from for this section. 

this story is about the history of inherited rice terraces, the back-breaking labor they require, and the families who manage them in the phillipines.  it's by rachel skeates, an aid worker from new zealand. check out her blog,
