yesterday, i described handling rejection through action. doing things is straightforward and logical for most of us. the second way is fuzzier and less natural. it’s called trust.
believing life works out as it should is excellent and affirming, but you can go further. the way to legitimize your desires and stack the odds in your favor is…visualizing. because, you can't see yourself receiving what you don't think you deserve. or, if you do initially, you'll get so accustomed to imagining it, you'll have no choice but revise your belief over time.
here’s how it works:
before you begin visualizing, set a timer. four minutes is plenty, otherwise you’ll lose focus. more visualizing isn’t better. consistent visualizing is better.
call to mind what you want. see it completed, not in progress. for example, your dream house is already built. plus, it’s been painted that obscure shade of aubergine you’ve been lusting after for months. in my case, i'll see myself meeting the "right" people.
guide yourself through the following general areas: personal, physical, spiritual, mental, professional, leisure. or, think of your own.
include all the sights, sounds, colors, textures, aromas, sensations you’ll encounter. feel the emotions you expect to feel. what's the view from the windows of the house you want? how will i act with my new friends? it’s also critical to add yourself to the scene.
that's a lot of categories. and, from experience, entering Daydream Territory is nearly inevitable. when i catch myself colonizing Mars with Elon Musk, i know i’ve gone too far. i think, wait, what am i supposed to envision? stuff i want and their accompanying smells and textures?
refocusing your mind and remembering what to include in the exercise can be grueling, especially as a beginner. to guide myself back to the goal, i keep a simple index card including everything i noted above in front of me while i visualize.
it sounds obvious, but since we don’t routinely think this way (although we should), the process can feel cumbersome. if you find another way to remember everything in the moment, please let me know!
you probably noticed a crucial omission: how. as in, how will i pay for that house? or, how will these people find me?
this is not your problem. the nitty-gritty of the way you’ll achieve your dream, be it a loving spouse or a light saber used in the original Star Wars movie, is out of your hands.
this is the trust portion of the program, remember? revel in the delegation. consider this the world’s most upstanding, compassionate form of outsourcing. you’re giving the universe the widest berth, the greatest personal space, to work its magic.
i hope these tips help you start a daily visualization habit. do you already visualize? why or why not? share your thoughts in the comments.
